We are a nonprofit land trust dedicated to preserving the open space heritage of Essex County. Greenbelt's land programs help local communities and landowners to safeguard ecosystems, foster agricultural usage, and protect scenic vistas and special natural features. One of our major goals is the creation of "greenbelts" consisting of river, trail, and other natural corridors, coastal systems, and visually intact landscapes.

Housatonic River Restoration
We of the Berkshires have a unique opportunity to reclaim the Housatonic River and to open avenues for everyone to enjoy this great natural resource. The release of PCBs into the Housatonic River from the GE plant has been the subject of intense debate. Beside the actual clean-up, there is also at stake money to compensate for "natural resource damages" the harm inflicted on fish, fowl and other floodplain life as a result of the contamination.

Massachusetts Community Forestry Council
The Massachusetts Community Forestry Council is a coalition of professional organizations, non-profitgroups, interested citizens and state agencies. Its purpose is to act as a forum for discussions anddissemination of ideas and as a stimulus for educating all citizens to become responsible stewards in theprotection of our community forests.

We protect more than 28,000 acres of conservation land in Massachusetts, conduct educational programs for nearly 145,000 schoolchildren each year, and advocate for sound environmental policies at the local, state, and federal levels.

Massachusetts Environmental Hotline
The Massachusetts Environmental Hotline 1-800-CLEANUP and website, is a public/private partnership designed to empower Massachusetts residents with proactive environmental information and programs through a single network. As this program continues to grow, it will expand to include even more community specific information.

Massachusetts Environmental Strike Force
The Environmental Strike Force is an interagency unit comprised of scientists and engineers from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, environmental police officers from the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Environmental Law enforcement, state police, and prosecutors from the Office of the Attorney General.

Animal Rights Coalition
The ARC is a group of UMass students dedicated to ending animal suffering in all areas of society( i.e. fashion, food,entertainment, and research), through education of the members of the UMass campus and surrounding areas.

BRAVE
BRAVE is a democratic, grassroots, non-hierarchal group dedicated to the causes of animal rights, veganism, and a more sustainable environment. Committed to the precept, "Think globally, act locally," BRAVE's activities are primarily focused on working on these issues in the Greater Boston area. At the same time, BRAVE favors a decentralized approach to advancing these concerns, and is always willing to assist with any individuals or groups who wish to advocate for animals, vegetarianism, and environmental matters in their own communities.

Students for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
The purpose of the MIT Students for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (SETA) is to foster awareness of various issuesrelated to animal rights and welfare, such as the use of animals in experiments and testing, in the clothing and fur industries, inhunting, in entertainment, and in food production. This is accomplished through Lobby 10 informational booths, vegan foodsales, lectures, ongoing discussion with MIT Food Service, and other activities. SETA also works with other Boston areaanimal rights organizations.

Alternatives for Community & Environment (ACE)
Based in Roxbury, Massachusetts, Alternatives for Community & Environment (ACE) has been working in partnership with lowincome communities and communities of color to achieve environmental justice since 1993. ACE provides legal and technicalsupport, educational programs, and organizing assistance to community groups throughout New England to solve environmentalproblems and develop local environmental leadership.
